Moses Baskin
SHINE Volunteer 1993 - 2012
Moses (Moe) Baskin received training in 1993 to serve as a SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) volunteer counselor and later stepped into the role of Area Coordinator providing overall leadership for the Palm Beach/Treasure Coast SHINE program. Moe dedicated 19 years of service to the SHINE program and was committed to assisting Medicare beneficiaries through one-on-one counseling as well as educating the public through presentations and attendance at health and wellness events. He was recognized throughout his 19 years of service with many awards including national recognition by the Agency for Health Care Administration for his efforts and expertise.
Moe passed away on May 17, 2012 at the age of 93. He was loved throughout the community by so many individuals including fellow SHINE volunteers, Agency staff and SHINE clients including those who returned annually for his guidance on Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. He was sought after to engage audiences throughout the community for his knowledge of Medicare. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh or smile.
Jennifer Vander May, SHINE Project Director, had the opportunity to work alongside Moe for the past eleven years. She spoke at Moe's local memorial service held on June 17th and shared this poem with attendees.
Moses Baskink, SHINE Volunteer
For 19 years he gave it his all
Not once deterring from the call
The call to counsel, educate and direct
For Moe there was no Medicare issue that he had not met
With vigor and wit he tackled each one
Until that day's work was finally done
His knowledge of Medicare impressed everyone
So awards he was given for the excellent job he had done
He led the SHINE volunteers with skill and determination
And always made sure to show his appreciation
Moe was soft spoken, gentle and caring
His time and dedication unselfish and willing
He will be missed by fellow volunteers, former clients and staff
But most of all by Harriet, his other half
They were a team, a terrific pair, Harriet and Moe lived and breathed Medicare
For off they would go when SHINE duties called
Whether to meet with a client or attend a health fair at the mall
Moe was special; no one can take his place
We are going to miss his presence and that grin on his face
